Montenegro by car (Budva - Becici - Sveti Stefan - Petrovac - Sutomore - Bar - Ulcinj) - Part 1. (Kotor - Dobrota - Perast) - is part 2. Herceg Novi and Tivat is part 3.
Tivat and Herceg Novi are the cities with the best waterfront in Montenegro!
Please note, we are talking specifically about the promenade, the walks. As the beaches in both cities are specific and normal few in fact. But for those who like hiking along the water with the views - Tivat and Herceg Novi are the best cities in Montenegro. Now about everything in detail. From Tivat to Herceg Novi is easiest to get by ferry. The ferry runs regularly, every 5-10 minutes - Ferry Kamenari (Herceg Novi) - Lepetani Ferry Company (Tivat). The price of the ferry is 4,5 euros - car (sedan). The crossing time between the shores does not really exceed 20 minutes. Everything is so organized and quickly done at any time of the day.
Porto IN and Pine marinas in Tivat - the best marinas in Montenegro
One of the best quays of Montenegro - Tivat - is waiting for you to visit and it is in the evening, after 17 hours. In the morning and in the afternoon there is nothing to do here.
Below is one of the variants of the route of walking along the quay of Tivat. The route begins by the red arrows:
- 1 - Porto IN pier - harbor with huge boats and cafes along the water. The promenade is somewhat narrow and not comfortable enough to walk, as there are few views.
- 1.1 - Pine Wharf - the most beautiful part of the promenade with nice cafes. There is plenty of space and no one is in the way, although there are always a lot of people. Then in the direction of the park Zupa for a while there is a beautiful promenade, which fades into the poorly maintained embankment with houses on the shore, then there is a bay with the usual boats. After this bay, the promenade is a path along the houses and goes to Zupa Park.
- 1.2 - Zupa Park with Kompleks Bizanti - essentially an "abandoned" park. But nature takes its course) Birds sing, flowers bloom... And the park turns into a great place for a walk in nature! Especially good for walks with dogs. There is a small but cozy beach just beyond the park, followed by a non-touristy pier and airfield. Basically the park walk ends here.
- 2 - A walking street with boutiques between the marina Porto IN and Pine is a lively walking street, very nice and cozy, though short.
By the blue arrows you can go back. The difference - there by the pier itself "Porto IN" through Porto Montenegro Yacht Club, back - by the street with boutiques. Walking time is about 2 hours.
From the pier of Port In towards the ferry along the coast there is a promenade to the village Donja Lastva. From the pier in Tivat you can walk through the beaches of "Ponta" and "Vaikiki" to the exit of the road to the highway. This region is very similar to the village of Dobrota in Kotor. It has beautiful terrain and a very cozy region in general. The water is clean! Ponta beach is a gorgeous view to the surroundings, but the beach is "wild", Waikiki beach is a cool equipped beach by all parameters! (But it's relatively small). Time to walk back there is about 1.5 hours.
Herceg Novi is the longest promenade in Montenegro
It is definitely worth a walk in both directions! From Igalo to Meline it is about 3 hours on foot. From these settlements and further the promenade does not end ... it seems that it simply has no end here) We walked the most popular tourist areas - from the center of Igalo, through the old town Herceg Novi to Meline pier.
From the town of Herceg Novi you can walk along the water to two neighboring villages, located on both sides:
- Herceg Novi - Igalo - a promenade full of cafes, stores and of course people. Back there - about 3 hours. In Herceg Novi it is necessary to visit the two fortresses Kanli Kula (open only at the beginning of May! It offers a panorama of Herceg Novi) and Fort Mare (in April it is open till 17 hours). Walking down from Kani Kula to Mare, we approach the old town of Herceg Novi with its narrow streets and lots of steps. The old town is unremarkable and not cozy. It does not require any attention on its own. Down on the promenade is a monument "Spomenik kralju Stefanu Tvrtku I Kotromaniću" - as a starting point for a walk in both directions along the promenade. Towards Igalo, even in April, it feels like the season is in full swing! All the cafes and stores are open, walking crowds of people.
Kanli-Kula - at the end of May is open until 21 hours, the entrance is 3 euros per person. Forte Mare - works till 20 o'clock, the entrance is 3 euros. Both fortresses are small and not really appealed to us. For curiosity you can visit one of them - it is enough. Fort Mare may be liked a little more, because of the "secret" descent down and a nice view of the embankment from the walls. But both forts are clearly not worth 3 euros... Although in 2021 were still worth 2 euros) Time to visit each fortress 15-30 minutes and no more! Between the two fortresses the descent goes through the streets of the old town also in 15 minutes)
- Herceg Novi - Meljine is a promenade with several cafes, concrete beaches, first line houses and beautiful views along the whole promenade! In April there are considerably fewer people walking here than towards Igalo. There are mostly joggers, cyclists or walking dogs. But the views here are very beautiful. At least the village of Meljine itself with its chic marina is worth a lot. Meljine quay is one of the most beautiful harbors of Montenegro, more like Italy or France! It can only be compared with Ljucica Bay on Lustica peninsula... Back there - about 2 hours on foot.
The municipality of Herceg Novi is a treasure trove of promenade, with its endless coastal villages and the road along them!
Portonovi Marina in Đenovići is a beautiful marina and the beginning of the promenade almost to the highway, through several villages. Definitely come here in the evening, after 17 o'clock and enjoy a stroll along the shore from the most elite marina Portonovići, then the village Djenovići, Baošići - you need to walk (red arrows). Travel time one way is about 1.5 hours (including a walk around the pier). Village Biela (yellow arrows to the highway exit) is a dull promenade and can be passed by car if desired. By the way, from Portonovi to the highway, through the villages of Djenovici, Baosici and Bijela, there is a road along the water (as in the village of Dobrota and Ljuta, Kotor municipality).
Portonovi is essentially a large luxury hotel with almost free entrance to the territory and directly to the marina with expensive yachts. Djenovici, Baosici are villages with road along the water, it is not very comfortable to walk when cars are driving, but in principle acceptable) There are many cafes, stores and great beaches along the water! The water is clean!!! But the village of Bijela is more like an abandoned area. There are no cafes and stores along the water, the beaches are concrete and not cozy.
In the village of Kumbor there is a hotel "One&Only Portonovi", it has a public park that leads out to the Portonovi Pier itself. There is almost no greenery here, but everything looks quite beautiful)
