Korcula Island is one of the largest and most famous islands in Croatia
The fame of the island has a good reason because of its beauty. It is quite distant, so the trip will take all day, but you can even come here for a couple of days. Let us tell you how to get to the island of Korcula from Dubrovnik. All Croatia as a place of pilgrim fans - Dubrovnik because of "Game of Thrones", Korcula - birthplace of Marco Polo)
Korcula Island how to get there
The route goes through the peninsula with the towns of Ston and Orebic. The ferry from Orebic to Korcula sails almost every hour, travel time 15 minutes. The cost of the ferry car + driver + passenger is 140 kuna or 20 euros one way. It takes about 1 hour to drive from Dubrovnik to Ston, and about 1 hour more to drive across the peninsula from Ston to Orebic. It is possible to buy ferry tickets in advance, but it is not necessary. If there are not enough places on the ferry, you have to wait for the next one... Tickets for the ferry we buy at the ticket office, and through the application "Jadrolinija" we just look at the schedule. The ferry runs from early morning to late evening. By the way, from this peninsula there is a ferry to the island of Mljet (Prapratno - Sobra) and mainland Croatia, bypassing the transit through Bosnia Herzegovina (Trpanj - Ploce). Before you see Korcula, we can safely advise you to visit the town of Orebic. Maybe there are no sights, but the town is very cozy and the evening promenade is very nice. However, there are no special entertainment and cafes to count on the fingers, but still, it's beautiful here!
What to see on the island of Korcula?
- the old town of Korcula + restaurants on its right, e.g. Restaurant Filippi
- Luka Korculanska bay
- a view of the old town "Panorama Korčula
- wine district "Lumbarda", namely home wineries Vitis Winery, Popić Winery, Lovrić Winery.
- Smokvica" wine region, namely Toreta Winery, Grošić winery
- Vela Luka town + Vela Spila - Vela Luka cave
Ferry arrives at the outskirts of the town of Korcula. It takes 5 minutes to drive from the ferry to the old town. Park on the promenade near the old town. The cost of parking is 25 kuna/hour. From the parking we walk on the right side of the old town, counterclockwise. We come to the turn and climb the steps into the old town to St. Mark's Basilica, continue through the old town and descend into the Luka Korculanska bay. From there we return to the restaurants and have lunch at one of the local establishments. We chose a more upscale place than just a pizzeria. So our choice fell on Michelin restaurant "Filippi" (the place has one Michelin star). The restaurant is located roughly in the middle of all the institutions and during the day there is no wind or sun, unlike other places. After lunch, we leave the parking and follow the blue arrows to the viewpoint of the old town "Panorama Korčula" - coordinates 42 ° 57' 34.55" N, 17 ° 7' 55.22" E. On the place of the observation deck is a bench right in the pine forest) It is wellooo beautiful and for the sake of this view is worth a trip to the island of Korcula. There is nothing more for travelers to see, but since you sailed here, you will go further) To visit the old town and the promenade of Korcula you should not spend more than 1 hour, then you can have a lunch for 1 hour. If we drive further, it takes about 15 minutes to the Lambarda region, about 30 minutes to Smokvica, about 1 hour to Vela Luka - that's from the old town of Korcula).
Korcula is a green island, mostly pine trees!!! Therefore, you should not only drive around the island on the central road between Korcula and Vela Luka, but you should also visit the regions of Lumbarda and especially Smokvica. Smokvica is full of pine trees mixed with vineyards - beauty!!! Wineries, all homemade/family owned, i.e. not big. They are more like an excuse to see the area. There are no sights in particular, but the views are very, very beautiful)
- Lumbarda: Vitis Winery, Popić Winery, Lovrić Winery.
- Smokvica: Toreta Winery, Grošić winery.
Wineries were selected with the highest scores of 4.8-5.0 and with a lot of reviews. In fact, the wines here are only dry and very similar to French wines, that is sour) But every home winery here is a farm with beautiful terraces where you can sit with a glass of wine and a light snack. Tasting in Smokvica is free, in Lumbarda they all charge 50 kuna for 1 tasting of three wines.
After the tasting, we drive to the town of Vela Luka. There's not much to see here, and the promenade is combined with the highway. The town doesn't look cozy, but it's quite nice. You can stay here for one night and take a walk in the evening along the promenade "Marina Korkyra". Here you can also visit the cave Vela Spila - Vela Luka, but only for those who haven't seen "Chudnite Mostove" in Bulgaria. After Bulgaria, this cave seems tiny) Attraction of Vela Luka is a mosaic, but in fact the usual mosaic on the waterfront)
So, optimal for the visit of Korcula is 3 days for relaxation: 1 day on Orebic, Korcula and Vela Luka. For travelers, only the old town of Korcula will be interesting, so it will be 2 hours on the spot. It's up to you to decide)
