Hvar how to get there
You can get to the island of Hvar by ferry from both ends of the island:
- Drvenik - Sućuraj travel time is 35 minutes. The ferry price for a car and two people is 172 kuna. The ferry with seats only on the street. The ferry is very small and not everyone gets in from the queue!!! The travel time from Sakurai village to Hvar is 1.5 hours on a very narrow road - "a semi-truck". If someone is driving slower than you, it is extremely difficult, or rather impossible, if the person ahead of you does not let you through! No views on the way!!! Dull and boring road.
- Stari Grad - Split journey time is about 1,5-2 hours. The ferry price for a car and two people is 436 kuna. The ferry is comfortable and huge, there is enough space for everyone. It takes about 20 minutes to get from Stari Grad to Hvar. It's easier to sail from Split to Stari Grad, and take a cab to Hvar. There is nothing interesting in Stari Grad, although there is an old town, promenade and even an attraction - the Fortress of Petar Hektorović. But everything is so dull and boring. In high season there are almost no people here, as well as stores and cafes...
As a result, there is no sense to go here for 0.5-1 day with the car. If necessary, it's easier to use a cab.
Drvenik is a cozy village in the Makarska region
It was in Drvenik that we encountered the fact that the ferry may not have enough room, even with a ticket. But the tricky part is even that))) The arrangement of the ferry queue here is in the form of a "snake from the airport", namely two turns. So the ferry gets only 80% of the first turn. If you came and was in the end of the second loop, then you will not get to the first ferry, and when the line will advance, you still will be blocked and will not be able to go anywhere until the next ferry! There is 1,5-2 hours interval between ferries. Well it seems normal again - you can go for a walk, leaving the car in line. But!!! We didn't get on the ferry at 13/45, the next one was supposed to be at 15/45. We went out for a walk, and at that time they gave us an unscheduled, off schedule ferry at 14/45!!!! And all the cars that were behind us ended up blocked... We really enjoyed walking around the town of Drvenik itself) There's a long beautiful promenade, the whole beach is shaded by pine trees!!! It is beautiful, cozy and nice cafes are here) You can come here as a walk and relax for a week. Time for a walk 1-1.5 hours for the whole promenade. Walking path is arranged so that one way we go along the water on a concrete path, come to the navel, turn around and go back a little bit to the steps. Up the steps we go to the upper path and walk back. There are benches everywhere along the way and shade from the pine trees everywhere! It's beautiful and peaceful, even in spite of all the "kotovassiya" with the ferry.
In Drvenik there are more viewing platforms and they are also attractions (monuments). The lower one can be reached on foot, the others are all on the way up one road:
- Vidikovac Kremenik (Panorama)
- Utvrda Drvenik
- Tombstone Kostanić Greb (Rock or Tombstone)
- Drvenik Sirida Sela
Hvar Island what to see?
- Hvar Promenade. On the map below, the central region, near the old town, is highlighted in blue. The rest of the promenade for walking is highlighted with red short arrows. The opposite side is also walkable, but not as interesting. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- The old town of Hvar ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Spanish Fortress / Tvrđava Fortica - fortress and panoramic point. You can go up on foot from the embankment or drive to the fortress itself. Parking is free near the fortress. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Napoleon is a panoramic point. The same views as near the fortress Tvrđava Fortica, only from a higher elevation. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Stari Grad, namely the old town + promenade + Fortress of Petar Hektorović ⭐⭐⭐⭐
In the town of Hvar is the most convenient parking #1. It is very close to the entrance to the seafront in the center of the promenade. The rest of the parking lots are on the hill and you have to walk through the old town and go down the steps to the seafront. Hvar's old town is full of steps! Parking costs about 10 kuna per hour.
It is ideal to sail to the island of Hvar from Split on a fast ferry. It is necessary to visit only the town of Hvar, namely the old town, the Spanish fortress and of course the promenade. Here you can meet the sunset over a delicious dinner. For visiting old town Hvar and the central part of the promenade you should have 1,5-2 hours. The promenade is huge, so you can walk for a long time) You can walk to the fortress if you want or take a cab. Reviews on the Internet say that there is no need to go into the fortress Spanish Fortress / Tvrđava Fortica, enough to relax on a bench next to the fortress with views of Hvar. You can stay here overnight or you can return to Split by the last ferries at 20 or 23 hours.
