Lake Garda is a beautiful and extraordinary place in terms of scenery - the best in northern Italy. There are similarities with the Bay of Cotorska in Montenegro.

The beauty of Lake Garda lies in the proximity of the villages to the water. The mountains seem to "push" the houses onto the embankment. The motorway goes by the lake. The whole lake can be driven around in a circle, admiring the views. We drove through all the villages from Garda to Limone. From the village of Garda the mountains begin, but they are not big and not close to the shore. The closer you get to the Malcesine - Riva del Garda - Limone region (the top three tourist towns), the mountains begin to overhang the road - the views become spectacular.

Malcesine, Riva del Garda or Limone are the best villages on Lake Garda

Having visited Malcesine - Riva del Garda - Limone, the conclusion in favour of Malcesine is unequivocal:

  •     A beautiful long promenade with views
  •     The old town and the fortress are well preserved
  •     Lift to Monte Baldo

Mount Baldo overlooks all of the above towns - Malcesine and Limnone, just near the lift at the top. The view of Riva del Garda opens up if you walk along the trail for about 15-20 minutes towards it. There will be a viewpoint with lots of people there, you can't get lost and not find it)

Malcesine is the coziest and most suitable for a walkable holiday on Lake Garda

The fortress and old town are intact with lovely narrow stone-paved streets. All the shops and cafes are open - it's a pleasure to walk around. But in the morning... until about 11 or 12 o'clock. Towards the afternoon, even at the end of September, so many people arrived that I wanted to get out of there as soon as possible! Blago promenade in the city very long and people are distributed evenly) Here it is safely possible to go for a week for rest! For those who like wide beaches, you're not going there) Mount Baldo, or rather the possibility to get there from Malcesine, makes the town very appealing. The village can be reached on foot from the summit, about 9 km away, following comfortable footpaths. You can also take the chairlift up and walk on the plateau. The views there are super breathtaking (photo above)!!!

Riva del Garda - didn't seem special

The town is squeezed by mountains on both sides. As a result, there is no 'wow effect' of overhanging mountains. And the town stretches inland as it sprawls across the valley. It looks much prettier from Monte Baldo mountain (photo below) than it actually is. The promenade is there, but dull and wide, no coziness at all. There are no cute shops or cafes. But there are big shops along the motorway. The old town in the photo below and in the panorama in the 'C' region is nothing special.

Limone is a pretty town, combining beach and promenade

The old town is well preserved with cosy streets leading to the promenade. There is a promenade that starts from the old town and flows into a lane along the beaches.
The whole town stretches along the water. The beaches start a little longer from the central area, but they stretch out in a long and wide strip with great views. So Limone can be recommended for a beach holiday as well as for a walk. A must-see in Malcesine is the hike up Monte Baldo, either on foot or by cable car.

Is it worth visiting Lake Garda? Yes, of course it is!

It's the perfect place for walking, enjoying nature and the old towns. You can safely go here for a week-long holiday or more. The most attractive towns to stay in are Malcesine or Limone.
