The Peloponnese Peninsula is an interesting place for travelers
The region's main attractions are scattered over a solid distance, but they are worth it (listed below in order of distance from Athens):
- Loutraki and the counties of Corinth City, including the Corinth Canal ⭐⭐⭐
- Nafplion ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Monemvasia ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
In what order you look at them doesn't matter, they all lie in the same direction and are all on the way.
Monemvasia - the pearl of the Peloponnese and Greece - top beautiful places in the world
This village is a must visit for travelers. From Athens it takes about 4 hours to get there, so it is advisable to settle somewhere near Monemvasia. To explore the village and the fortress you have to spend 3 hours or more.
On the map below are shown with red lines the main roads in the lower and upper town. Arrows indicate the required route for a walk. There is no way to enter the ancient city of Monemvasiya by car. All the cars stay along the road. Therefore, it is easier to settle somewhere farther from the peninsula, and to the walls of the fortress to come as early as possible in the morning to have parking spaces otherwise to the town will have to go km and km...
Monemvasia is divided into the lower, ancient city and the upper Acropolis of Monemvasia, the remains of the fortress walls and the ruined city. The lower town is almost fully functional and you can even rent a house there. But there is no special need for that. The first thing to do is to climb the Acropolis and explore the city from a bird's eye view. So you can see the whole structure of the lower city and it will be more interesting to walk around it. You can walk through the streets of the lower town or you can walk along the fortress wall near the water. There are ancient steps with picturesque views leading to the Acropolis of Monemvasia) The Upper town is basically ruins and there is nothing to see as architecture, but the views here are truly amazing, and worthy of TOP world sights!
Nafplion - a city with a chic fortress and a promenade
Attractions:
- Palamidi Fortress ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Akronafplia Fortress ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- The promenade around the fortress of Akronafplia (Arvanitia Walking Area) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Ancient Epidaurus (ruins of the city and theater) ⭐
- Mycenae (ruins of an ancient city) ⭐
The map below shows a complete walking route through the very "heart" of Nafplion. We start at the Arvanitia Parking Area. Follow the long blue arrows and return to the parking area. So we walk in the area of Akronafplia Fortress, of which there are only ruins and splendid views to Palamidi Fortress on one side and to Nafplion Pier on the other side. This whole route can also be traveled by car, but then it is not convenient to admire the views. It takes about 40 minutes to walk there and back. Next, from the parking area we move in short blue arrows, along the promenade of Nafplion, including along the pier with boats, sometimes posh) Then again in a circle back to the parking area. The promenade goes along the water and the views along the entire route are beautiful. The walk time is about 40 minutes. Before arriving to the parking lot, there are steps uphill, a 900-step hike to the Palamidi fortress! But the fortress of Palamidi can be accessed by car from the other side. The view opens from the fortress anyway, so there is no need to go up on foot) Note that Palamidi is open until 15 hours! The fortress of Palamidi is famous not only for its panoramic views, but also for its integrity! It is almost entirely preserved) It is very beautiful and a must see! Time of the fortress itself is about 1 hour and then if you climb on foot still can lay about 40 minutes in both directions. If driving up to Palamidi, it will also take about 15 minutes. In total, Akronafplia, the Promenade of Arvantia and Palamidi - will take you a full day. You can have lunch or dinner near the pier, there are plenty of cafes, as well as in the nearby streets in the old town of Nafplion. The old town is between Akronafplia and the pier.
The second map below shows the reserve parking lot, which is a little further away, but there is a huge amount of space. If you can hardly find a spot in the first parking lot during the season, there will definitely be a spot in the second one. The route you can drive to Palamidi fortress from Akronafplia, the center of the old town.
The city of Nafplion is convenient to visit Ancient Epidaurus and Mycenae - ancient cities, theater, tombs, more precisely the ruins. But that's if there's nothing to do. Each place will take about 40 minutes to visit. In visiting it you have no special need, if you are not a historian or archeologist... The entrance fee is 6 euros. The parking lot is free. It is located at the entrance.
Loutraki is a beach town with a promenade and beaches
The sights of Loutraki and the surrounding area:
- A pedestrian promenade with cafes and a beachfront. In general, the promenade goes from pedestrian to freeway promenade, but you can also walk along it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Cape Ireon with the lighthouse and the ruins of the Archeological Site of Heraion at Perachora. Beautiful serpentine road, nice lake on the way, just before the cape and the atmosphere at the cape is quite relaxing. Time to visit about 1 hour. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Saint Patapios Monastery with a panoramic view of Loutraki - nice serpentine road and decent views, but nothing special) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- The Corinth Canal - spectacular and spectacular. What you need is a pedestrian bridge. You can park near it out of season) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Ancient Corinth and the Temple of Apollo - ruins, not worth seeing, on the way to Acrocorinth ⭐
- Akrokorinthos Fortress - ruins of a fortress overlooking the cities of Corinth and Loutraki. The parking lot near the fortress is very small, there won't be much room in season. On the way there are views just as good, the same panorama of the cities. The territory of the fortress is very large, there are places to climb, but there is not much to see, everything is in ruins. Only the viewpoint is beautiful. Time to visit 1-2 hours and more if you like ruins. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Peloponnese what to see in Greece 100%. Visiting time from 5 days.
