Sri Lanka and sanitation/hygiene are not compatible!
A similar situation in Goa (India). What can not be said about Phuket (Thailand), there all clean and cultural... So, what to eat in Sri Lanka. Everywhere widespread roti (stuffed pancakes in our words). They are cooked by locals in really unsanitary conditions! They immediately take the meat and money with the same hands and wipe their hands on their pants and T-shirt... They obviously do not wash their hands after the toilet - you can tell by looking at them))) Although the Lankans are considered "hygienic" because they wash themselves in the toilet, not use paper. And they eat with one hand and wash with the other.) From my own sad experience, I've proven that eating in such conditions is NOTHING! Unless you want to remember childhood diseases from dirty hands...
It's best to cook by yourself! Or in a cafe where a lot of people are not local and the prices are not low! Then there is a chance that the food will not run away from your plate or cook at least washes his hands periodically).
Fruit is becoming a great substitute for food. They are cheap and healthy, so this is a huge plus! The variety of fruit in Sri Lanka is as great as in Thailand. In India the fruit is much worse. But again, the fruit must be washed with soap or scalded with boiling water (even if it's a fruit with the skin, which is cleaned immediately - bananas and pineapples). In the markets do not taste anything, it is better to buy one piece and test at home in normal conditions.
- I want to single out bananas in particular, there are about 5 kinds here and they all taste different!!! It was here that we tried the "milk" bananas - babiki, bubbly, yellow and white in color. They taste sour and are juicy, different from other bananas)
- The pineapples are very flavorful and tender! The mouth is almost no stinging from the fruit acid. We are talking about elongated shapes - pineapple girls.
- Rambutan is a delicious fruit. Juicy, sweet, but not sugary!
- Sau-sep (Sau-sep, Smetanne yabluko) - an outlandish fruit. Do not take a lot. This is the one in the photo we ate for two days together). Very sweet, honey flavor. The first bite causes delight, but after a couple of bites, you do not want it at all) The feeling that you eat triple cologne with sugar ... the aroma is very strong!
- Watermelons are not sweet! You don't even have to take them. They are the same in India.
- Mangoes and papayas are great, ripe and delicious. Mangoes are a wide assortment, about 5 types.
IMPORTANT: do not take overripe fruit! There are worms in bananas with black spots. Mangoes and papayas with mashed sides - sour!!!
Breakfast at the hotel. It is a good decision to take a hotel with breakfast. Breakfast will be buffet style. Selection is poor, but there are always eggs, toast with butter, fruit, natural juices. You can also order lunch and dinner at the hotel. You can order rice and vegetables. It is better not to order meat. You can order grilled fish, but you should cook it well.
Desserts in Sri Lanka?
There's no milk, it's not clear what's wrong with flour... What desserts are we talking about, the fruit probably) The most "popular" is the muffins from bananas, but they probably include the skin) Below is a photo of the cake and how the cake looks like in reality. Let's keep silent about the taste... The only question that remains is how can sugar sweetness not taste good!!!?
Bread and pastries in Sri Lanka - sold only in large supermarkets in large cities and in special red cars that run through the village several times a day. When the car with bread goes, it plays an intrusive melody very loudly - the Pavlov effect is produced))) Also runs a car with ice cream, a different tune. Do not be fooled by the bread or the ice cream - there is no milk in the country)))) The patties contain a lot of onions, not understandable minced meat and peppers, a lot of peppers - all not edible!
