Maafushi is not the paradise Maldives! Coming here, you will not see the classic Maldivian holiday) There are no proper beaches, but there are crowds of people, mostly Indians and other dark-skinned tourists, and no Slavs at all. But the main thing is that there is no paradise rest on Maafushi - there is nothing to see except diving and snorkeling tours, and you can do those from any island. The one exception is that snorkeling trips with whale sharks depart from here, so it is worth dropping by for that for 2 days and not an hour longer! Even the palm trees on the island are half-dry and yellow, and high-rise construction is going on everywhere, not stopping even at night!

Below we have deliberately included two maps of Maafushi island to illustrate as fully as possible everything that is on the island...

What Maafushi island consists of

  • 1 - a dirty port, where you will not even be able to spot a shark if it swims in, unlike Rasdhoo, where they are fed every evening
  • 2 - a beach with water attractions. You cannot swim here, because jet skis and other water entertainment keep starting and finishing all the time.
  • 3 - two small bikini beaches with a bunch of tourists who just splash around in the water, because there are no corals here!!! This beach is called Sunset, but in fact the Sunset beach should have been in another part of the island, where the prison is... On Thoddoo and Rasdhoo the sunset beaches are sheltered from the wind, while on Maafushi a strong wind blows.
  • 4 - a beach for locals. You can be in clothes here, but in fact there is nothing to do here, because a very strong wind blows...
  • 5 - the whole coastal zone is full of rubbish, corals, seaweed and jellyfish!!! This trash is topped off by an ensemble of crows( By the way, crows are everywhere on Maafushi - they caw all the time and steal food.
  • 6 - a dump!!! which they burn
  • 7 - the prison... no comment
  • 8 - an area with no beach and no views, with dead corals and rubbish on the shore.
  • 9 - the busiest tourist area on the island, with cafes and souvenir shops.

What to do on Maafushi

  • Day 1 - swim at the bikini beach and book a tour for tomorrow, then dinner at a restaurant and a stroll through the souvenir shops in the evening
  • Day 2 - a tour to see whale sharks and mantas, diving, and then "get out, get out" of here as fast as possible!

The island is almost 1300*300 metres, but because of the prison it effectively shrinks to 900*300, and from that you have to subtract the dump and the shore with seaweed and jellyfish...

A holiday on Maafushi will not give you the classic Maldivian relaxation. It feels more like Thailand, India, Sri Lanka or even Turkey, but by no means like the paradise islands of the Maldives... Maafushi has no atmosphere of tranquility; it rather "smells" of a cheap package holiday( During the day everyone sits in one corner of the beach in the shade and bathes in a knee-deep puddle, and in the evening they rummage through the souvenir shops) Coming here after Thoddoo and Rasdhoo... what a huge contrast, and not in Maafushi's favor)

If you still want to go to Maafushi, watch the two videos below) Listen to the crows' "singing", and enjoy the view of the dump and the coral graveyard right on the shore... Maafushi is not a typical, classic Maldives holiday; just choose other islands to relax on and the Maldives will definitely delight you!

Half of Maafushi island looks exactly like this!

Luckily, the sunset in the Maldives does not depend on the island) The best time of day is dinner at a good restaurant and enjoying the evening rays of the sun as it sinks into the water beyond the horizon!

On Maafushi we strongly recommend the restaurant Mr.Octopus - Your holiday Chef, and specifically the grilled seafood dishes! Grilled octopus is no different from the most tender crab and lobster... We do not recommend the pizza or the grilled tuna)
